About me

How did it all begin? Quite harmlessly, of course: with a Sinclair ZX Spectrum. Once I got my hands on it, that was that. Other people collected stamps; I collected computers, cables and error messages.

Then came a Commodore Amiga 1000, an Amiga 2000, an Atari 520ST and several other machines that were considered the future at the time. Today, even an average toaster probably has more computing power, but considerably less character.

I started with BASIC. C followed on the Amiga. Later came COBOL, machine code, Python and whichever language was needed to turn an idea into reality. Manuals were patient; compilers rather less so.

I worked with Windows from 98 to 10 as well. Eventually I switched to Linux Mint because constantly buying new hardware just to keep Microsoft happy becomes rather tiring. The computer should work for me, after all—not the other way round for its next system requirement.

Now that I am retired, I finally have more time for these experiments. A quick “I’ll just try something” occasionally turns into programs, instructions and projects. Some even work on the first run. Naturally, that is never suspicious.

Operating-system compatibility

Compatibility is stated separately for every project. The supplied Linux Mint projects deliberately verify the operating system before they start.

Developed and tested

Linux Mint 21.x and 22.x with the required Python, Tkinter and GSettings components.

Potentially limited

Other Linux Mint desktop editions may run the core functions, while automatic Cinnamon/Mint-Y theme detection can be limited.

Not supported by this release

Other Linux distributions, Windows, macOS, BSD, ChromeOS and Android are rejected by the current Linux Mint check or lack required Linux components.
